Program Details

Exchanging America’s signature Leadership Followship program will be launched in Tanzania, East Africa, in early August 2018.  American leaders will embark on a 2-week leadership journey that challenges their notions of leadership and their understanding of global issues. Followships will be offered in three disciplines:

1) Business, 2) Civil Society, or 3) Government.

The Followship management structure entails a one to one pairing of an American Leader to a Leadership Mentor in the Mentor’s community and context. The Mentor will host the American Leader in their home, workplace, and community throughout the duration of the Followship. In addition to Leadership Mentors, a Site Manager will have weekly check-ins with American Leaders to ensure their needs are met and to reflect with them throughout their Followship.

Ideal Leadership Followship Candidates

Ideal American Leaders are between the ages of 20-30 years of age (outstanding candidates outside of this demographic will be considered) and are positively addressing challenges in their communities and are leaders in Civil Society, Entrepreneurship, or Government. Leaders can be current college or graduate-level students, recent graduates, young professionals, or any individual interested in improving their leadership capacity.

Each Leadership Mentor's home is also evaluated for proper security measures prior to the American Leader’s arrival.

American Leaders will be in frequent contact with their Leadership Mentors and Site Managers through regular in-person meetings and electronic surveys.

All Leadership Mentors are alumni of a prestigious U.S. government exchange program, the Young African Leaders Initiative's Mandela Washington Fellowship, and are committed to developing innovative and inclusive global leaders.

Sample profiles of Leadership Mentors for 2018 are prominent lawyers advancing women’s rights, activists increasing access to information for Tanzanian citizens, tech entrepreneurs, advocates strengthening the rule of law, investigative journalists, among others.
